From the first conversation to long-term follow-up
Five steps, one after another. Each one has a reason, and the plan changes with the results of follow-up.
- Step 1 of 5.
History and examination
The visit starts with a conversation: your symptoms, medical history, current medicines and earlier test results. Then comes a full examination.
- Step 2 of 5.
Tests and imaging
If needed, blood tests or imaging are requested to give a clearer picture of what is going on. The reason for each one is explained to you.
- Step 3 of 5.
Putting the results together
Results are not read one by one. They are read side by side and alongside your symptoms, because a single number is not a diagnosis.
- Step 4 of 5.
Treatment plan and referral
The plan is explained in plain language. If the problem belongs to another specialty, the doctor refers you to the right specialist. Never start, stop or change a medicine without your doctor.
- Step 5 of 5.
Follow-up and reminders
Internal medicine conditions usually need regular follow-up. Later tests and visits show how things are moving, and the plan changes with their results.

Simple answers to the first questions.
I have symptoms and do not know which specialist to see. Where do I start?
If your problem is not clearly about one organ, such as the heart or the skin, or you have several symptoms at once, an internal medicine specialist is usually a good place to start. The doctor looks at your symptoms and earlier results together and, if needed, sends you on to the right specialist.
What should I bring to the first visit?
Your latest test and ultrasound results, a list or the boxes of every medicine you take, your history of illness and surgery, your insurance booklet and ID. If something is missing, come anyway; the support team can help you get it.
Are my blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol treated separately? Are they not linked?
They are linked. Together the three strain the heart and blood vessels more than any one alone, which is why they are best looked at together. The target for each in your case is set by the doctor.
Do I need to fast for a blood test?
It depends on the test. Some, such as blood sugar and blood fats, are usually taken fasting and others are not. The laboratory or the doctor's instructions will say. Do not set your medicines aside without asking the doctor.
One of my test numbers is abnormal. Should I worry?
One number outside the range is not always a sign of disease. Age, medicines, how you were that day and the lab method all play a part. A result has to be read together with your symptoms and history; bring it to the visit.
How often do I need a check-up?
There is no single answer. It depends on your age, family history and risk factors, and the doctor decides. The support team can remind you when periodic tests are due.
Will I have to take pills for the rest of my life?
It depends on the condition and your situation. Some conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, usually need long-term treatment, and treatment changes as things change. Every decision about a medicine is for the doctor; do not stop it or change the amount yourself.
Which symptoms are an emergency?
Chest pain or pressure, sudden struggling for air, weakness or a drooping face, very low or very high blood sugar with severe drowsiness, and vomiting blood or passing blood or black stools. In these cases do not wait for an appointment; call 115 immediately.
